Public Open House for I-68 Cumberland Viaduct Study in Allegany County

(October 14, 2026) – The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will host a public open house from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, October 27, at the Allegany Museum, 3 Pershing St., Cumberland, to share information and receive feedback on the ongoing study along I-68 (National Freeway) Cumberland Viaduct from US 220 (McMullen Highway) to MD 639 (Willowbrook Road) in Allegany County.

The study seeks to identify opportunities to improve safety, access and connectivity for pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists. Known as a Planning and Environmental Linkages Study (PEL), the effort considers environmental, community and economic goals early in the planning stage. Those goals are then carried throughout project development, design and construction. The study and analysis of needs began in winter 2025 and is expected to be completed in the fall of 2027.

The public open house is an opportunity for residents, businesses and commuters to learn about the transportation needs along the corridor and view the study details. Attendees may arrive any time during the open house to view maps and displays, speak with State Highway Administration representatives and provide feedback. There will be no formal presentation. Study materials will be available on the I-68 Cumberland Viaduct PEL Study Portal page after the open house.

Those requiring assistance to participate in the open house, including interpreter needs for hearing/speech difficulties or assistance with the English language, may email [email protected] before the event. Please indicate the desired language in the subject line. Maryland Relay Service can assist teletype users at 7-1-1.

Questions about the open house or general inquiries can be directed to Project Manager Mulowa K. Kajoba at [email protected] or Community Relations Manager Holly Pearl at [email protected].

This project reflects the Moore-Miller Administration’s focus on initiatives that enhance safety, expand accessibility and promote economic opportunity. It also is consistent with the Maryland Department of Transportation’s Serious About Safety initiative, a department-wide commitment to advance improvements that drive safety goals and save lives.
